Best Advice I Ever Received

(Well . . . at least some of the Best Advice I Ever Received.)

A library of advice rises up in the stacks of my brain. Collected over more than seven decades, these treasures represent lives of individuals who made contributions to my growth and maturity. Some nuggets came from The Holy Spirit which He invested in the fabric of my being. Others came from fellow pilgrims. From the bits below, may there be a gem shining just for you.

Bible: The Bible is not just a good suggestion.

Community: Be a part of a group.

Disappointment: Disappointment is inevitable; discouragement is a choice. (C. Stanley)

Hospitality: Keep a meal in the freezer which can be pulled out at a moment’s notice and shared with unexpected guests.

Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit is The Secret to living the abundant Christian life.

Home: Flowers bring joy to any room.

Kitchen: A cup of coffee in the morning and a cup of tea in the afternoon help solve a host of dilemmas.

Marriage: Keep short accounts; never go to bed with unresolved conflict.

Mindset: Control is a myth. (B. Lawrence)

Mother: Be quick to say to your child, “I am sorry; I was wrong.”

Overachiever Mom: Less is enough.

Parenting: If you want them to talk to you as teenagers, talk to them as toddlers. Be there!

Perspective: 90% of life is attitude, the other 10% is perspective. (L. Thompson)

Prayer: Always obey the impulse to pray. (D. Horsey)

Philosophy of Life: Say yes whenever you can.

Priorities: My #1 priority for everyday is to spend time with Jesus.

Project Development: GEMO; good enough, move on.

Submission: “Thy will be done.”- the prayer that always gets answered.

Traveling: Pack two days ahead of time to avoid forgetting important items.

Turning Down a Request: No is a complete sentence.

Unwanted Realities: In acceptance lies peace. (E. Elliot)

Vacation: Allow each part to inspire you: 1) planning 2) participating 3) reflecting.

My Bottom Line, Best Line, Last Line: Nothing is worth anything unless everything is given to God.

Hershey Bar Pie

Labor Day marks the official end to summer. Make one last sweet memory by serving this pie! Though different versions exist, this one from my mother is our favorite.

Ingredients

7 1.45-ounce Hershey candy bars

20 large marshmallows

½ cup milk

½ pint whipping cream

Cool whip (8 ounces)

Graham cracker pie crust

 Instructions

Place broken candy bars, milk, and marshmallows in a suitable dish and melt together in the microwave for 3 minutes.

Stir the mixture and add additional time as needed until the consistency is smoothe and blended.

Set aside and cool slightly. (I placed my mixture in the freezer for a brief, quick chill.)

Whip the whip cream until it forms a peak.

Fold into chocolate mixture.

Spoon into the graham cracker pie crust.

Cover and refrigerate overnight.

Before serving, top with Cool Whip which has safely thawed in the refrigerator to be able to spread.

Oh my! Pity the person who does not like chocolate.

Fear Is a Liar

When he told you you're not good enough

When he told you you're not right

When he told you you're not strong enough

To put up a good fight

When he told you you're not worthy

When he told you you're not loved

When he told you you're not beautiful

That you'll never be enough

Fear, he is a liar

He will take your breath

Stop you in your steps

Fear he is a liar

He will rob your rest

Steal your happiness

Cast your fear in the fire

'Cause fear he is a liar

When he told you were troubled

You'll forever be alone

When he told you you should run away

You'll never find a home

When he told you you were dirty

And you should be ashamed

When he told you you could be the one

That grace could never change

Fear he is a liar

He will take your breath

Stop you in your steps

Fear he is a liar

He will rob your rest

Steal your happiness

Cast your fear in the fire

'Cause fear he is a liar

Let Your fire fall and cast out all my fears

Let Your fire fall Your love is all I feel

Let Your fire fall and cast out all my fears

Let Your fire fall Your love is all I feel

Let Your fire fall and cast out all my fears

Let Your fire fall Your love is all I feel

Oh, let Your fire fall and cast out all my fears

Let Your fire fall Your love is all I feel

Oh, fear he is a liar

He will take your breath

Stop you in your steps

Fear he is a liar

He will rob your rest

Steal your happiness

Cast your fear in the fire

'Cause fear he is a liar

'Cause fear he is a liar
